A Medieval Theatre Set

From the Great Hall, an ancient stone stairway leads to the Chamber and Oratory. With a 25ft-high vaulted ceiling, ancient oak-beams and impressive open fireplace, the bedroom is a celebration of medieval craftsmanship. Centre stage is an antique four poster bed and light floods the room via an extraordinary trefoil carved stone, leaded light window. Views out capture the lawns, wild flower meadow and Cotswold hills beyond.

Ancient oak panelling and a carved glazed entry screen surround the seating area with its drop-down desk and smart TV. What has now been thoughtfully converted to a WC is thought to have originally been part of the confessional box while the roll-top bath enables in-room bathing overlooking the open fire. Via a secret spy hole (or squint), behind the bed, the Abbot could secretly observe guests in the Great Hall below.

Spectacular monastic medieval architecture blends seamlessly here with modern day comforts to provide real drama. The Abbots Chamber provides a special, one-of-a-kind experience.

Accessibility: This room is not recommended for those who may be unsteady on their feet or have limited mobility. This is due to the medieval stone stairway with rope hand rail used to access the room. In addition, accessing the roll-top bath can be awkward for anyone with reduced or limited mobility. Due to its medieval architecture and layout, the Abbots Chamber does not have a separate walk-in shower and has a compact WC compartment (please see room floor plan for details).
