Elizabethan Suite

An English Parlour

A single step through a medieval stone archway brings you to an oak doorway, behind which lays the English Parlour known now as the Elizabethan Suite. Centred around a beautiful antique solid-oak four poster bed, the room is rich in colour and warmth from its fabrics and full-height original Elizabethan oak-panelled walls.

The original Elizabethan stone fireplace is smaller than its medieval cousins but of classic proportions and style for its date. A beautiful impressionist painting of Lilly Millet and child attributed to John Singer Sargent graces the seating area.

Large, stone mullion, leaded light windows flood the chamber with light and offer views out over the gardens. From the here, a single step brings you into the dressing room with large dressing table/counter and double basins. A further step and you’ll be in the most spacious bathroom at Abbots Grange with wet room, bath, separate WC and bidet.

Of all the rooms at Abbots Grange, the Elizabethan Suite was Francis Millet’s favourite. It was here that he produced a number of fine works of art including the oil on canvas ‘The Expansionist’. This masterpiece was exhibited and held in high regard at the most important art exhibitions of its time, including the annual exhibition of the Royal Academy in 1899. Exceptionally rich in meaning and historical significance, this painting exemplifies the qualities for which Millet was revered in his lifetime, particularly his ability to poetically depict the curiosity and amusements of life.

Stepping into the Elizabethan Suite feels like stepping back in time; a special place and, without doubt, a masterpiece in its own right.

Accessibility: This suite is not recommended for those who may be unsteady on their feet or have limited mobility. This is due to the medieval stone stairway with rope hand rail used to access the suite.
