Sustainability

Abbots Grange is a grade II* listed building in the heart of Broadway, Worcestershire. The owners – Richard and Topsy Taee recognise that we all have a responsibility and a part to play to develop a clear vision for the future of the environment and sustainability for the hotel, local community, and the surrounding countryside.

We started our journey to create our Cotswold project in 2012 when we began to evaluate our core values. Having opened the hotel in the summer of 2010, it took time to establish the business and ‘find our feet’ but this we did and have gone on to build a ‘little piece of paradise’ in Broadway.

A major part of our commitment is to implement our strategy as we embark on a journey to achieve “Hotel Sustainability Basics” status from the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Whilst we already have the principles in place, we recognise that in a Grade II* listed building we need to take specific steps and actions to achieve our sustainability goals. Our commitment is to lead environmental and sustainability principles through our 3 pillars:

  1. Nature recovery
  2. Ecology
  3. Energy

We understand the positive impact the team can have on sustainability, and with their collaboration we have already begun implementing good practices. We reduce energy consumption, employ heat management controls, engage with a local supplier network, prioritise waste recycling in food and beverage, garden waste management programme and composting, as well as using recyclable products where possible. As part of our future plan, we are committed to integrating best practice and guiding principles on sustainability. We are focusing initially in the following areas:

  • Establishing key performance indicators with specific action to support all the key areas of our commitment.
  • Total local community engagement from procurement, recruitment and partners.
  • Collaborate with the local community to support environmental initiatives and partnerships with like-minded organisations.
  • Development of the gardens to support the organic nourishment of our guests, staff, and local community.
  • Establishing key policies to support our commitment in the following key areas:
    Energy Management
    Waste and Water Management
    Land Management

As we work towards achieving our targets and objectives, we recognise that we will have to adapt the way we work and operate both the Hotel and the management of the land. Our personal investment is key to our future as we look to implement our commitment to sustainability and to the continued development of the historical journey of Abbots Grange. As a local family living and working in one of Worcestershires most beautiful medieval buildings, the sustainability legacy we leave in this ‘little piece of paradise’ for our family, future generations of guests, the local community, and our team is our primary concern.
